Why Is Soil So Important?
Soil is much more than "dirt." It is one of the basic components our lives depend on. Michigan's soils have taken thousands of years to develop into the resource we depend on for our food, our wood products, and our recreational areas. Unfortunately, soil is often only noticed when it is ground into our clothes or tracked into our homes. Sadly, too many people view the soil as an unlimited resource, that is, a resource we will never run out of. The truth is soil is easily destroyed if it is misused, but, with proper management practices, soil is a renewable resource that can continue to serve mankind's needs for the foreseeable future.
