Learning About Weights
and Measures in Cooking

In these FUN exercises you will use time, temperature, weight, volume and count. When you are finished, you will also have dozens (a dozen is 12) of yummy cookies!

"U.S" Oatmeal Cookies
Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Blend:
2 sticks (8 ounces) butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar

Add and blend well:
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In separate bowl, mix:
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

Slowly blend flour mixture into wet ingredients.

Add:
3 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups raisins

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes.  Makes 60  2 1/2 inch cookies.


"Metric" Chocolate Chip Cookies
Heat oven to 190 degrees Celsius.

Blend:
250 mL butter or margarine, softened
175 mL brown sugar
175 mL white sugar

Add:
2 eggs
5 mL vanilla extract

In a separate bowl, mix:
550 mL flour
5 mL salt
5 mL baking soda

Slowly add flour mixture to wet ingredients.

Add:
Two 168-gram packages of semi-sweet chocolate chips
250 mL chopped nuts

Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 190 degrees C for 8 to 10 minutes.  Makes 100 5-centimeter cookies.
