Aquaculture, fish raised for food, will be a major new agricultural growth industry in the 21st Century as the wild catch declines. In fact, the U.S. (including Michigan) has a major opportunity to develop an internationally competitive aquaculture industry to serve national needs and the global marketplace.
Michigan's 65 licensed aquaculture facilities produce several seafood products, including trout, sunfish, bass, bluegill and even shrimp!
Michigan has 33 commercial trout operations which sold over 474,000 pounds of fish in 2000. The production value was over $1 million, ranking Michigan 12th in the nation for the value of trout sold.
Fish raised for food in Michigan are the three Trout species (Rainbow, Brook and Brown), Yellow Perch and Catfish. Fish raised for fee-fishing are the three Trouts, Bass, Bluegill, Catfish, Walleye and Muskellunge.
