Selected to represent over 450 soils found in Michigan, Kalkaska sand was first identified in 1927 near Kalkaska, Michigan, which is where it got its name.  This unique soil may be found in over 29 of Michigan's 83 counties with over 750,000 acres identified and mapped to date.  It is expected that by the time the present soil survey is completed, over 1 million acres of Kalkaska sand will have been identified in Michigan.  The dark areas of the map represent land predominated by Kalkaska sand.
