Why Was This Site Developed?

The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development has created this website to assist food industry and regulators in obtaining food safety training. This website was created and funded by the industry Food Safety Education Fund (created under the authority of the Food Law of 2000, Act No. 92 of 2000, 289.4117) using funds collected from food licenses to provide statewide training and education to consumers on food safety.

Who Should Take A Food Safety Training Class?

Do you work in a restaurant? Have you helped at the PTA pancake suppers? Or maybe you've made a casserole to take to the church potluck? Anyone who cooks or serves food to the public should be interested in food safety training. You can learn everything from how to wash your hands to managing a food packing plant. Food safety training is sometimes mandatory for a food service worker, but ALWAYS necessary to assure that safe food will be served to the public.

Where Does One Find Manager Certification Training and Food Service Worker Training?

Manager Certification Training:

• MDARD approves manager certification training materials. To obtain a list of these approved programs, please point your browser over to the Manager Certification Training pages.
  
  
• The Food Law of 2000 incorporates the FDA 1999 Food Code. One requirement of the code states the person in charge of a food service facility must demonstrate knowledge of the code.  (2-102.11) These classes should prepare you to take the exams necessary to meet this code requirement.

Food Service Worker Training:

• Some Local Health Departments require specific training for issuance of food licenses or operational approval. Please contact your licensing agency for guidance concerning these mandatory trainings.

How Does One Find The Food Safety Training Program Suitable to His or Her Needs?

At the top of the database page, right under our logo, you'll see the word "search" in blue. (You might want to print a copy of these instructions to follow during the search process.) Click on the word "search" when you are ready to begin.

There are 6 fields to help you. Most of these have the little arrow indicating a drop down box. Fill in areas of interest to narrow your search. The 6 fields are:

1. County:
   Each county is listed; as well as "ALL COUNTIES" (a list of every training listed for the entire state); and "STATEWIDE" (types of trainings that are offered in any county in the state. An example would be an instructor who is willing to travel to different counties; or trainings offered on VCR/CDR)
   Here's a list of all Local Health departments.  There you can find the one nearest you or the food service establishment.
   
   
2. Contact:
   You can list a trainer by name to search for classes. If you don't know a trainer by name, just leave this section blank.
   
   
3. Language:
   The default language is always ENGLISH. Check the drop down box for trainings offered in other languages.
   
   
4. Name of Class:
   You can list a class by name for your search. (example: if you are looking for a servsafe class, type in the title here.) 
   
   
5. Target Audience:
   • Food Service Operator: for those preparing food for service.
   • Processing Operator: workers in processing / manufacturing plants.
   • Food Inspectors: inspectors evaluating a facility
   • Public: Those with little or no food safety training. This would include anyone from children…to mothers wanting to prepare safe food for a family…to volunteers of a group wanting to serve hot dogs at a football game.
   
   
6. Type of Training:
   Facility: trainings held at a Local Health Department, Extension Office, college, etc.
   On-Site: trainings offered in a restaurant, processing plant, etc. for their employees. 
   Video / CDR: trainings offered on videos or CD Rom.
   Internet: trainings offered on the internet, often through universities for college credit.

After you've made your selections, click the "search" button.

A list of training programs will appear.

On the left side of the list is a column titled "REPORT".  Click on the little book icon to find information about that class.
A "file download" screen will appear. Click on "OPEN", and you can print out the contact information for the class.

How Does One Add a Food Safety Training Program to the MDARD Food Safety Training Database?

To add a food safety training program to the MDARD Food Safety Training Database, please complete and submit the form below:

If you prefer, you may contact MDARD at MDA-TrainingSites@michigan.gov.  Provide your email address, street address, zip code, first and last name, phone number, and a brief description of the training you offer, as well as the areas of the state where the class will be offered (if applicable). You will be sent a login name and password to enter the full class information into the database.
