Sheep

Import Requirements:

  1. Sheep must have an official interstate certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) filled out by an United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) accredited veterinarian in the animal’s state of origin.

Exception: Sheep going directly to slaughter may be accompanied by an owner shipper statement instead of an interstate CVI.

      2. Sheep must have official identification (ID) regardless of age. Official ID numbers must be recorded on the CVI.

Official Identification Options:

  1. USDA Scrapie Tag:free scrapie tags are available through the USDA Michigan office at 517-337-4705.

  2. Legible Tattoo: scrapie Flock ID with individual animal tattoo.

  3. Microchip (EID’s)

    1. Microchip must be ISO 11784 and 11785 compliant, consisting of 15 digits 840 number with a frequency of 134.2 kHZ.

    2. Can only be used in registered animals, must be approved by the registry and also recorded on the registration document and CVI.

    3. Microchip reader must accompany animal.

    4. Use of microchips as the sole official ID is discouraged. For details on microchipping, contact the USDA Michigan office at 517-337-4705.

Exception: Sheep going directly to slaughter do not need official ID.

 

Exhibition (show, demonstration or display) Requirements:

  1. Sheep moving within the state of Michigan for exhibition:

    1. Must have official identification (ID) (see Official Identification Options above, under Import Requirements).

  2. Sheep being imported from out of state for exhibition:

    1. A completed interstate certificate of veterinary inspection, meeting requirements stated under Import Requirements.

    2. Official ID (see Official Identification Options above, under Import Requirements).

  3. Contact the fair, show or exhibition authorities for any additional requirements.

     

Intrastate Requirements:

  1. Sheep moving within the state of Michigan must have official identification (see Official Identification Options above, under Import Requirements).

Export Requirements:

  1. Sheep being exported from the state of Michigan must have official identification (see Official Identification Options above, under Import Requirements).
