Swine

Requirements for all swine imported into Michigan:

1. Official interstate health certificate or official certificate of veterinary inspection.
   
   
2. The importation of swine vaccinated for pseudorabies is prohibited. A statement as to PRV vaccination status should be on the health certificate.
   
   
3. Swine imported into this state shall be individually identified by an official ear tag or tattoo that includes the USDA code for the state of origin, or by ear notches only for registered swine accompanied by registration papers. Exception for feeder pigs.
   
   
4. Swine shall not be brought into this state from a livestock auction market or collection facility where slaughter swine are handled except when being imported for slaughter purposes only.
   
   
5. Swine brought into this state for slaughter shall be delivered only to a slaughterhouse approved by the Director to receive livestock for slaughter, or to a collection facility approved by the Director to receive swine for slaughter. The swine shall be slaughtered within 48 hours after arrival at the slaughterhouse.
   
   
6. Feral swine shall not be allowed to enter Michigan. Feral swine are any swine having lived any part of its life not under the husbandry of humans.
   
   
7. On May 9, 2008, a moratorium was placed on the importation of all swine intended to be used for hunting or shooting at any facility and on any swine intended to be used for breeding or being raised for any purpose related to hunting or shooting.  This moratorium applies to all species and breeds of swine and remains in effect.
   
   

Additional requirements for feeder swine imported into Michigan:

1. Pseudorabies requirements:
   
1. Originate from a qualified negative pseudorabies-free herd,
   or
   
2. Originate from a pseudorabies feeder pig monitored herd,
   or
   
3. Originate from a state that participates in a pseudorabies testing program that is approved by the Director,
   or
   
4. Originate from a pseudorabies-free state or region,
   or
   
5. Individually test negative for pseudorabies within 30 days prior to importation.
   

Additional requirements for breeding swine imported into Michigan:
(Breeding swine are any sexually intact swine.)

1. Brucellosis requirements:
   
1. Originate directly from a validated herd,
   or
   
2. Originate from a brucellosis-free state or region as determined by the Director.
   or
   
3. Test negative to an official test for brucellosis within 30 days prior to importation


2. Pseudorabies requirements:
   
1. Originate directly from a pseudorabies qualified herd,
   or
   
2. Originate from a pseudorabies-free state or region as determined by the Director,
   or
   
3. Test negative for pseudorabies within 30 days prior to importation.
   
NOTE: PRV-vaccinated swine are NOT permitted entry into Michigan.


3. Breeding swine shall be quarantined and isolated at the destination on the health certificate or certificate of veterinary inspection and retested for PRV with a negative result between 30 and 60 days following the date of importation.
