Overseeing implementation of the recommendations of the Lt. Governor's Commission on Higher Education & Economic Growth

In June 2004 the Lt. Governor's Commission on Higher Education & Economic Growth was established to develop a set of power ideas that would transform Michigan's education system and help Michigan make the transition into a new economy that is adaptable and innovative.  The bipartisan commission was challenged to meet three goals:

  • Double the percentage of residents who attain postsecondary degrees or other credentials that link them to success in Michigan's new economy;
  • Improve the alignment of Michigan's institutions of higher education with emerging employment opportunities in the state's economy; and
  • Build a dynamic workforce of employees who have the talents and skills needed for success in the twenty-first century.

The final report of the Cherry Commission offers 19 recommendations that are a roadmap to fundamental change in Michigan . CLEG's Increasing Educational Attainment Committee is working to support and implement the Cherry Commission recommendations by:

  • Assisting in identifying and recommending ways in which policy recommendations can be improved and realized; and
  • Identifying and providing guidance regarding recommendation areas, which require additional ownership/accountability.

In addition, as part of the Work Readiness Credential Committee, Committee members were charged with making a recommendation about whether or not Michigan should implement a statewide work readiness credential. More information can be found on the Work Readiness Credential Committee page.
