The Displaced Homemaker Program provides employment and training services to displaced homemakers so they can achieve and retain full-time, unsubsidized employment.

Description
Local Michigan Works! Agencies (MWAs) operate the Displaced Homemaker Program. Displaced homemakers’ employment and training needs are assessed on an individual basis and services are tailored to meet each participant’s individual needs.The employment and training services must include core, intensive and training services. Core services include, but are not limited to, outreach, intake, and orientation to other services; initial assessment, job search, and placement assistance. Intensive services include comprehensive and specialized assessment, group counseling, and shortterm pre-vocational services. Training services include on-the-job training, skill-upgrading, and occupational skills training.

Eligibility
An eligible individual is defined as someone who has been providing unpaid services to family members in the home and who:

• Has been dependent on the income of another family member but is no longer supported by that income; and
• Is unemployed or underemployed, and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment.

Procedure
The Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) distributes federal funds to local MWAs for use in the operation of their Displaced Homemaker Programs. Funds are distributed through a competitive process.
