Proprietary Schools Unit

Proprietary Schools are private schools that teach a trade, occupation or vocation, usually to individuals beyond the high school level.  In Michigan, these schools offer dipolmas or certificates rather than degrees.  The purpose of propretary school licensure is to:
  1. Insure that students receive quality education and training from privately owned trade schools operating within the state of Michigan by reviewing the schools for compliance with minimum quality and performance standards;
  2. Insure that permits to operate new schools are issued only to applicants who meet all state standards relative to the operation of a proprietary school in the state of Michigan;
  3. Insure that  existing schools remain in compliance with state quality standards;
  4. Resolve formal compliants about school practices and unlicensed operation;
  5. Insure that students affected by school closures are able to complete their programs, or are indemnified again loss of tuition and fees;
  6. Insure that records of schools are properly secured and maintained;
  7. Provide information on proprietary schools to students, parents, businesses and other interested citizens.

Approximately 450 schools are currently licensed.  The Proprietary School Unit also licenses recruiters annually.
