Media Representatives Invited to Michigan Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs Statewide Education Conference at Saginaw Valley State University

October 3, 2008 Media representatives are invited to attend the Michigan Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs (COSSA) Second Annual Statewide Education Conference on Friday, October 10.
"Postsecondary Education for All - Transition to Success!" is the theme of the conference sponsored by COSSA, in partnership with Saginaw Valley State University. Educators and decision-makers in Michigan's K-16 system will have a dialogue on the educational attainment challenges and disparities facing Spanish-speaking students throughout Michigan. Conference participants will learn about best practices and develop next steps for future action.
Featured speakers include: keynote Mr. Jaime Escalante, Teacher, Professor and Author. His life story was the basis of the movie, "Stand and Deliver;" Dr. Donald Bachand, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Saginaw Valley State University; and Mr. David Gamez, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Saginaw Valley State University. The Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs was created in 1975 to serve Michigan's growing Spanish-speaking population which is today the second-largest and fastest-growing minority group in Michigan.
The Commission is made up of 15 individuals appointed by the Governor to develop policies and plans to serve the needs of Michigan's Spanish-speaking people.
