What is Biomass Energy? Biomass is any organic matter which is available on a renewable basis through natural processes or as a by-product of human activity. Biomass includes: agricultural crops and crop residues, energy crops, wood and wood waste, yard waste, food and food processing waste, biosolids, and biogas. Biomass can be converted into energy through many different means such as combustion (burning), gasification, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion.

What We Do
The goal of the MBEP is to encourage increased production and use of energy derived from biomass resources through program reports, partnerships, technical assistance, and education.
In the last few years program reports have been completed on ethanol, anaerobic digestion, and wood waste. MBEP has partnered with state agencies, universities, units of local government, and other organizations to coordinate workshops, implement projects, and to increase awareness of biomass energy options in Michigan. For more information on recent projects, please see the Project Funding area.
