Manipulation under anesthesia is a procedure designed to restore the lost range of motion of the spine to address chronic, unresolved non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions. It requires the use of non-paralyzing anesthesia in an effort to provide relaxed skeletal musculature, which allows the chiropractor to reduce the effects of chronic and severe conditions without patient guarding and pain. This is an outpatient procedure and must be performed in an appropriate setting that provides access to monitoring and resuscitation equipment in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center or appropriate health care facility that can provide a safe operative environment and that can provide transfer capability to inpatient care. The anesthesia must be administered by a physician or a physician's assistant or nurse anesthetist under the supervision of the physician.
The chiropractor's sole role is the correction of the components of the vertebral subluxation complex. He or she will have nothing to do with the sedation of the patient.
Prior to participating in one of these procedures, the chiropractor should get additional training. The Board of Chiropractic recommends the completion of a course of at least thirty-six (36) hours of didactic and clinical training, completion of a competency examination and the national certification in manipulation under anesthesia.
Failure to follow the standard of care when participating in the manipulation under anesthesia procedure may be deemed unprofessional conduct in Michigan.
