Medicine USMLE Examination

USMLE STEP 3 MEDICAL EXAMINATION

To be eligible to sit for the USMLE Step 3 examination, an applicant shall establish the following:

a) That the applicant has passed the following examinations: USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2.

b) That the applicant has completed not less than 6 months of postgraduate clinical training in a program approved by the board in a board-approved hospital or institution.

The USMLE Step 3 examination is now a computerized examination. It is administered over a 2-day period. An applicant must apply to the Federation of State Medical Boards and the Michigan Board of Medicine in order to take the USMLE Step 3 examination. Information and application forms for the Step 3 examination are available at www.fsmb.org. The Michigan Board of Medicine USMLE applications are available on this website.

If you have additional questions, please call the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) at 1-817-868-4041.

Once eligibility has been determined, the Michigan Board of Medicine will notify FSMB. Applicants are instructed to go to the FSMB candidate website at https://apps.nbme.org/fsmbexamstatus/prod/jsp/login.jsp to print their Scheduling Permit. The Scheduling Permit will contain detailed instructions on how to schedule your exam at a Prometric Test Center. This website also contains information on the status of your Step 3 application on file with the FSMB as well as score reports when they are available. Score reports will no longer be mailed to candidates.

Failure of the examination will require that the applicant retake the examination. This process includes submission of a new application, documentation and fee. An applicant may retake Step 3 no more than four times within a 12-month period.
