Definitions

    "Acute Care Hospital"

Defined as a facility offering inpatient, overnight care, and services for observation, diagnosis, and active treatment of an individual with a medical, surgical, obstetric, chronic, or rehabilitative condition requiring the daily direction or supervision of a physician.  An Acute Care Hospital does not include a mental health hospital licensed or operated by the department of community health or a hospital operated by the department of corrections. There are approximately 142 licensed Acute Care Hospitals in the State.  (Public Health Code, Act 368 of 1978, Section 333.20106)

    Critical Access Hospital

A hospital may be defined as such and can also be federally certified if it's located outside any Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the Office of Management and Budget, or that has been recognized as urban under the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, Part 412.62. In addition, a hospital not located outside of a Metropolitan Statistical Area as defined in Title 42, but located in a city, village, or township with a population of no more than 12,000 and in a county with a population of no more than 110,000, may be designated by the Department as a critical provider to satisfy the eligibility requirements for certification as a Critical Access Hospital.
