Home Health Agencies

Home Health Agencies (HHAs) provide services that cover a broad range of care provided in the home environment and may include part-time skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, home health aide services, medical social services, durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, oxygen, walkers), medical supplies and other services. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administers the Medicare program for Home Health Agencies.  The Michigan Department of Community Health, Bureau of Health Systems (BHS), acts on behalf of CMS to ensure that federal requirements and quality standards are met.

Allegations of improper care treatment, ABUSE or fraud may be made verbally, in writing, or anonymously by calling the Bureau of Health Systems' hotline number 1-800-882-6006 or by faxing to (517) 241-0093.

Patient Eligibility

Four (4) of the following criteria are necessary for eligibility:

1.     Skilled Need: RN, PT, OT, Speech / Language Pathology Services

2.     Homebound: Normal inability to leave the home

        a.     Leaving home takes considerable and taxing effort

        b.     Absences are infrequent

3.     The patient is under a plan of care by a physician

4.     The patient receives services from a Medicare participating Home Health Agency.
