On March 16, 2007, a technical advisory group met to discuss the issue of Michigan becoming an Agreement State. An Agreement State assumes authority for radioactive materials that are currently regulated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If Michigan decides to pursue Agreement State status, the State's radioactive material program, currently in the Department of Environmental Quality, is likely to combine with the x-ray program (Radiation Safety Section). Both programs would be part of the Department of Community Health.
The summary of the March 16, 2007 meeting has been posted on the Consideration of Michigan Pursuing an NRC Agreement webpage.
