Childhood Obesity Prevention Workgroup

The Childhood Obesity Prevention Workgroup is an executive-level Workgroup led by Michigan Surgeon General Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom for the purpose of creating a childhood obesity policy agenda for Michigan.  

The following is a summary of the workgroup's progress to date:

October 29th, 2007 Meeting:
The group met for the first time on October 29, 2007 in East Lansing. Three Policy Action Teams were formed: Education, Community, and Health, Family and Child Care Services. These Teams meet on a regular basis to determine policy agenda items in their specific area.

March 24th, 2008 Meeting:
The group met again on March 24, 2008 at Lansing Community College. Each of the three Policy Action Teams briefed the workgroup on their efforts to identify potential policy priorities. The entire workgroup came to a consensus and identified the following six policies as priorities for year one:

Education Policy Action Team

  • Physical and Health Education in Schools
  • Coordinated School Health Programs

Health, Family, and Child Care Services Policy Action Team
  • Body Mass Index Surveillance
  • Medicaid Coverage of Childhood Obesity

Community Policy Action Team

  • Complete Streets and Safe Routes to School in Communities
  • Improved Access to Fresh Healthy Food at Food Retailers in Underserved Areas

July 9th, 2008 Meeting:
The group met for a third time at the Childhood Obesity Prevention Advocate Summit on July 9, 2008 at Lansing Community College.  The three Policy Action Teams presented rationales and recommendations for action for each of the six year-one policies.  This meeting featured a presentation on advocacy and introduced the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan Coalition.  To review a  comprehensive summary please download the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan: Policy Summary, July 2008.
