The Healthy Homes Section provides four primary functions that address the reduction of lead-based paint poisoning throughout the State of Michigan, including:
- Administration of HUD Lead Hazard Control funds to abate lead-based paint hazards in 8 high- risk counties; Clean Michigan Initiative bond funds are also currently being used by the program to make homes throughout the state lead-safe for young children.
- Public and professional education presentations and materials.
- Certification of lead inspectors, risk assessors, abatement workers, supervisors, clearance technicians, abatement contractors and the accreditation of training providers.
- Enforcement of certification, accreditation and work practice standards established by the Lead Abatement Act of 1998 and associated Administrative Rules.

Functions of HHLPPP include screening, statewide surveillance, follow-up of identified lead poisoned children, extensive public and professional education, primary prevention to reduce lead hazards before families are poisoned, and outreach efforts to identify adults occupationally exposed in an effort to prevent "take home lead."
