    Prevention

Tobacco Retailer Kit can be found at this link.

    Education

How do I apply for a Governor's Discretionary Grant (GDG)?
Monitor the Education Section's website for the invitation to apply (via the GDG announcement). Applications must be submitted electronically by the due date listed on the announcement. Prospective applicants may access the GDG electronic application and additional information about the grant at the following link: https://magic.state.mi.us. The effective date for this grant is October 1 through September 30 each year.

I have some questions related to tobacco, can you assist me?
The Tobacco Section of the Department of Community Health will be glad to answer any inquiries. They can be reached at 517-335-8376. You may also contact your Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Coordinator for information. Please check the Coordinators list under the Drug Education Section for the Coordinator in your area.

May Public School Academies (PSAs) apply for federal funds and state grants directly?
Yes. Each PSA is allocated funding based on their student enrollment and Title 1 count. In order to access these funds the PSA must apply to the Office of Drug Control Policy for funding.

May a home-school apply for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act funds?
No. Home-schools are not eligible for funding under the federal grant program.

May a PSA apply for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act funding independently? Can they apply as a consortium of districts or other PSAs, or a combination of these, for purposes of accessing the benefits of federal and state funds?
Yes. PSA's may apply independently or in consortium. For example, a PSA can join a consortium operated by another public school district. If the PSA applies in consortium with an ISD, the ISD must treat the PSA just as it would any other participating local school district or local educational agency.
Or, a PSA could also simply join a local school district to form a new consortium, as long as the arrangement had been approved by the local superintendents. Further, an ISD must also invite all the PSA's in any local district it invites to join its consortium.

What types of drug and violence prevention services are allowable? What about the drug prevention philosophy?
All drug and violence prevention programs must include clear "no-use" messages. Double or mixed messages concerning drug and alcohol use are not permitted.
If a PSA does NOT apply for funding allocated to the PSA, the funds may be retained by the local school district or reallocated to another district.

Where can I get more information about the Safe and Drug-Free Schools funds or get a copy of the application?
Contact one of the Education Consultants by phone at 517-335-0733 or write to:

    Office of Drug Control Policy
    Drug Education Grants Section
    Lewis Cass Bldg., 5th Floor

How can I reach the DEA?

Whom should I speak to if I want to report illicit drug activity?
Please call your local police department to report any such criminality.

How would I know if my neighbors are cooking methamphetamine?
Things to look for include: unusual, strong odors similar to that of fingernail polish remover or cat urine; odors of ammonia, renters who pay cash; large amounts of products such as cold medicines, antifreeze, drain cleaner, coffee filters, batteries, duct tape, lantern fuel, clear glass beakers and containers; residences with windows blacked out, frequent visitors spending only brief periods of time and lots of nighttime traffic.

For more information, see the ODCP Methamphetamine Resource Site.

What should I do if I know of a methamphetamine lab?
If you are aware of a methamphetamine lab, please do not go near it. Instead, call the Meth Tip Line, 1-866-METH TIP (1-866-638-4847) immediately. The proper authorities will collect any information you have and will conduct an investigation. However, if you think someone is in the act of committing a crime, or if an emergency exists, please call 911.

The law enforcement community in Michigan, along with the media and retailers, is working very seriously to curb the methamphetamine production in our state. For more information, see the ODCP Methamphetamine Resource Site.

How do I know if my gambling has become a problem?
