You are making a great difference in the lives of children in Michigan. Thank you!
Background Information (from 2007)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is centralizing vaccine inventory and distribution for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program at the national level. This effort is known as the Vaccine Management Business Improvement Project, or VMBIP. CDC has selected McKesson Specialty, a division of McKesson, to accomplish this.
Vaccines for Children (VFC) providers in Michigan are scheduled to begin the process of Centralized Ordering and Distribution this year. The go-live date for when Michigan will begin centralized distribution through McKesson Specialty, Inc. is May 12, 2008.
Providers will place vaccine orders through their local health department (LHD), hopefully using the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR) system already familiar to immunization providers in our state. The LHD will continue to serve as the gatekeepers of VFC vaccine. The orders will be processed by MDCH, and then vaccine will be shipped directly to the provider's office from McKesson Specialty.
McKesson has a history of success in the distribution of vaccines and other pharmaceuticals (information on this company can be found
www.mckessonspecialty.com
). We are looking forward to working with McKesson as we change the way we do business and continue to vaccinate our citizens.
The goals of the Vaccine Management Business Improvement Project (VMBIP) are to:
-
Simplify processes for the ordering, distribution, and management of vaccines in order to be able to respond more quickly and effectively to public health crises related to disease outbreaks, vaccine shortages, and disruption of the vaccine supply.
-
Implement a more efficient vaccine supply system that will result in the redirection of vital public health resources away from vaccine distribution and towards public health activities that will improve immunization coverage levels.
-
Significantly reduce the lead time between orders for vaccine and delivery of that vaccine and enable the direct delivery of vaccines to providers.
Local health departments can assist VFC providers with training for office staff, assessing and transitioning ordering and storage needs and providing resource materials. VFC providers that have questions or concerns should contact their local health departments.
