The mission of the Division of Genomics, Perinatal Health, and Chronic Disease Epidemiology is to provide the scientific basis for the prevention of chronic diseases, injuries, and adverse maternal and child health outcomes. The Division identifies, analyzes and interprets data to:

• determine the relative importance of the causes and risk factors for illness, disability and premature death;
• conduct surveillance to quantify the burden of illness, disability and premature death;
• identify important health discrepancies among Michigan's population; and
• evaluate the effectiveness of health programs and services.

The Division conducts routine epidemiologic surveillance to document trends in mortality, morbidity and costs in disease topic areas including but are not limited to cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, intentional injuries, unintentional injuries, and infant, child and maternal mortality and morbidity. The Division is responsible for the administration of the Behavioral Risk Factor Survey regarding important health behaviors of Michigan's population. The Division also assists in the department's response to enquiries regarding local adverse health events (disease clusters), and collaborates on the development and enhancement of surveillance indicators and systems.
