The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to over 40,000 members today located throughout the world. ASM represents 24 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators.

ASM members have many common goals, including the desire for professional improvement through ASM journals, books, meetings, and other Society activities. ASM members help to promote a better understanding of the importance of microbiology today and in the future. Thousands of professionals and researchers in the life sciences and related disciplines have joined ASM because of the impact it has on their lives . We invite you to be a part of it.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories ( formerly ASTPHLD)

It is the mission of the Association to promote the role of public health laboratories in support of national and global health objectives, and to promote policies and programs which assure continuous improvement in the quality of laboratory practice.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories GOALS:
•Advocate effectively for public health laboratories through legislation, policy development, and public information.
•Expand the role of public health laboratories in addressing environmental health issues.
•Advocate and collaborate in establishing a national public health surveillance system.
•Collaborate with international health organizations on public health issues.
•Establish and promote the role of public health laboratories in the evolving health care environment.
•Build stronger partnerships with federal, state and local public health entities and private organizations to further public health objectives.
•Enhance educational activities based on national and international public health issues.

The Big Picture Book is intended to serve as both a catalog of virus pictures on the WWW and as an educational resource to those seeking more information about viruses.  Several types of information about viruses can be found. First and foremost, we show you what they look like, either by electron microscopy or by computer assisted imaging. The viral images are listed by their taxonomic groups. Also listed on the page are links to detailed information (Tutorials and On-Line Courses) about the viruses, and links to other WWW sites with additional information.

Global Salm-Surv (GSS) is a collaborative project of the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response (Geneva, Switzerland), the WHO Collaborating Center for Foodborne Disease Surveillance (Atlanta, USA) and the Danish Veterinary Laboratory (Copenhagen, Denmark). GSS is a global network of laboratories and individuals involved in isolation, identification and antimicrobial resistance testing of Salmonella and surveillance of salmonellosis. The primary goal of this network is to strengthen the Salmonella surveillance capacities of national and regional laboratories.
