Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are closely related to the organochlorine pesticides in their chemical, physical and toxicological properties and their widespread occurrence in the aquatic environment. There are 209 different PCB compounds, termed congeners, based on the possible chlorine substitution patterns. Mixture of these congeners were formulated under the trade name Aroclor and labeled according to the average chlorine content (Aroclor 1254 is 54% chlorine by weight). PCBs are analyzed as individual congeners by capillary column GC with electron capture detection. The lab performs the analysis of 85 congeners that are prevalent in Lake Michigan fish.
