Learn about Suicide Prevention

Michigan Department of Community Health Director Janet Olszewski discusses some of the warning signs of suicide.

  • Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death in the country. It is also the third leading cause among youths and young adults between 10 and 24 years old.
  • My name is Janet Olszewski and I am the Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health.
  • Parents, educators, health-care providers, and health authorities are encouraged to learn more about suicide.
  • We have to look for the groups at greatest risk, warning signs for suicide, and potential prevention strategies.
  • Look for the signs of someone at risk of suicide such as previous suicide attempt, a history of depression or other mental illness, and alcohol or drug abuse.
