The holiday season is a time for celebration, but don't let yours take a bad turn.

I'm Janet Olszewski and I'm the Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Here are a few ways to make sure that you and your family are safe throughout the holiday season.

Make sure to water your Christmas tree frequently and keep open flames away.

Do not overload electrical outlets with holiday lights and inspect your light strands to be sure they are working properly.

After holiday parties, use a designated driver. Keep our roads safe for everyone traveling.

And finally, keep pets and kids indoors during freezing temperatures and keep walks and driveways clear of ice and snow.
