The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has named A. Edwin Dore as its new Chief Deputy Director, officials announced today in Lansing.

“Ed has a wide range of management experiences, a solid grasp of issues facing health care, and demonstrated leadership skills both inside and outside state government,” said Janet Olszewski, MDCH Director. “We are extremely fortunate to have such a highly qualified administrator with a proven institutional and operational track record join our MDCH executive team.”

As Chief Deputy Director for MDCH, Dore will oversee day-to-day operations of the department’s Medical Services Administration, which manages the state’s $7 billion Medicaid program; the Health Policy, Regulation, and Professions Administration, which manages health policy, health professionals and systems, regulatory and legislative affairs; the Public Health Administration, which manages the state’s efforts to improve and protect the public health; and the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Administration, which manages the state’s efforts to assist citizens that are mentally ill, along with MDCH’s overall business and financial operations. He reports directly to Olszewski.

Dore rejoins state government from his current position as President of the Ingham Regional Healthcare Foundation. Previously, Dore had served as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Secretary of State for the Michigan Department of State from 1986 to 2002 under Republican Candice Miller.

A resident of Haslett, Dore also worked as Deputy Chief Financial Officer and Executive Assistant to the Wayne County Executive from 1983 to 1986, and as Deputy Controller and Staff Policy Analyst for Ingham County from 1981 to 1983.

Prior to his work in Ingham County, Dore served as a senior administrative assistant in the Senate Democratic Majority Office from 1976 to 1981, associate director of the Michigan Municipal League from 1974 to 1976, staff associate to New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller from 1973 to 1974, and assistant to the director of the Oakland County Planning Commission from 1971 to 1973.

Dore, 58, holds a Masters of Public Administration from Wayne State University – University of Michigan, and a Bachelors Degree in Public Administration, State, and Local Government from the University of Michigan. He officially begins work on January 31, 2005.
