World No Tobacco Day Focuses On Role Of Health Professionals And Celebrates Cessation Success

Contact:  T.J. Bucholz (517) 241-2112
Agency: Community Health

May 31, 2005

In support of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) salutes the efforts of Michigan doctors, nurses, dental professionals, hospital staff and all other health care providers who support smokers who want to quit.

“Studies show that smokers are more likely to quit smoking permanently if they receive physician assistance, behavioral counseling, and nicotine replacement treatment,” said Janet Olszewski, MDCH director.

To date, more than 8000 Michiganders have called the statewide QuitLine for information and support in quitting. Residents can call the QuitLine at 1-800-480-QUIT to enroll in a free counseling program and to see if they qualify for free nicotine patches.

Reflecting the importance of professional health care intervention, 13 percent of all enrollees in the QuitLine say that they were encouraged to quit by their doctor or nurse.

May 31 has been celebrated around the world since 1988 to raise awareness of the international impact of tobacco use and promote tobacco-free environments. This year’s theme focuses on the role of health professionals in helping people to quit.

If you are a health professional and want more information about how to help your patients quit smoking, please call your local county health department or contact Karen Brown at 517-335-8803.
