FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 15, 2005
In cooperation with the Michigan State Fair and Consumers Energy, the Michigan Commission and Office of Services to the Aging have selected Donald Mathews of Muskegon as one of two Senior Citizens of the Year for 2005. He was honored today at the Michigan State Fair.
Donald Mathews, 80, was selected the winner in the Leadership category. As Past-President of the Muskegon Rotary Club, Mr. Mathews provided exemplary leadership to the 180-member organization and impacted lives both locally and internationally. According to William Loxterman, current Rotary President, who nominated Mathews for the award, he "inspired Muskegon Rotarians into action. He is a leader who values input and participation from all involved."
Mathews has also been actively involved in numerous community volunteer activities with the local United Way, Chamber of Commerce, and other community organizations. Mr. Mathews is also active in his Church. As a pastor and long-time community activist, he places great emphasis on improving the lives of seniors.
"Mr. Mathews’ leadership qualities and dedication to seniors have made a positive impact on so many lives," said Sharon L. Gire, Director of the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging. "He is well deserving of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award and we are so pleased to be able to honor his hard work."
The Senior Citizen of the Year Award Program is a long-standing partnership between the Michigan Commission and Office of Services to the Aging and the Michigan State Fair. Consumers Energy has supported the awards program for many years. Each winner receives a congratulatory letter from the Governor, a certificate of congratulations from the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, and a plaque from the Michigan State Fair. This year, each winner also received a $1,000 award from Consumers Energy.
