Helping Patients Quit - New Joint Commission Guidelines

Agency: Community Health

Partners ActionToQuit initiative has released a tobacco cessation implementation guide for hospitals. Care providers and hospital leaders can use this tool to implement a comprehensive tobacco cessation program for patients.

Hospitalization provides an opportunity to urge tobacco users to quit and assist them in their attempts. With Partnership for Prevention funding, The Joint Commission has developed a new set of performance measures to address the assessment and treatment of tobacco dependence for all hospitalized patients. This new measure set will be available for hospital selection in January 2012.
