Updated Guidelines for Perinatal Care

In January, 2009, the Department of Community Health convened a group of experts to develop recommendations for a regional perinatal system of care in Michigan, pursuant to boilerplate language in the FY 2009 appropriations for the Department. The result was a report submitted to the Legislature on April 1, 2009 which included Michigan Perinatal Level of Care Guidelines and recommendations for implementing a regional system of care in Michigan.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) released Guidelines for Perinatal Care, 7th Edition which expanded the classification system from three levels of care to four. In 2013, a state committee reviewed the changes in the Guidelines and compared them to the 2009 state guidelines. Consequently, the revised AAP/ACOG Guidelines for Perinatal Care, 7th Edition have been endorsed by the Department.

The AAP/ACOG Guidelines can be found here.
