The Michigan Department of Civil Rights has issued the following statement on the alleged hate crime perpetrated in Grand Rapids on Nov. 11th:
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights condemns any and all acts of hate. Although an investigation into the assault against Hai Vo has not yet been completed, the fact it appears to have been precipitated by racially derogatory remarks raises very serious concerns for us.
While we expect a complete and fair investigation into this specific matter, we urge the Grand Rapids community to speak out against hatred and intolerance and defend the cause of racial and ethnic diversity. The mere possibility that this tragedy was motivated by racial hate must be met with a decisive and convincing confirmation that Grand Rapids will not tolerate intolerance.
The MDCR recognizes the need for individual communities to take responsibility for preventing and effectively responding to acts of hate. Accordingly, through the work of the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes, we work to provide resources and training to local law enforcement, community, civic and faith-based organizations who want to help fight hate and intolerance in their community.
In addition, through our Crisis Response Team, the Department is also available to provide support to victims of hate crime and communities attempting to cope in the aftermath of such incidents. Individuals, families, agencies or community members in need of support should speak to members of our Crisis Response Team or call our department at: (800) 482-3604.
