MDCR Hosts 2nd Annual "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Youth Roundtable on Diversity" at Schoolcraft College

Contact:  Harold Core, Public Information Officer 517-241-3986
Agency: Civil Rights

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights and the Office of Governor Granholm will be holding the Second Annual "Governor's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Youth Roundtable on Diversity and Michigan's Future." The event will be held from 12-2PM on Monday, January 21st 2008, at Schoolcraft College's VisTaTech Center, 18600 Haggerty Rd., Livonia, MI 48152.

This event marks the second year that MDCR has presented the opportunity for 60 outstanding Michigan high school and college students to meet in one place to discuss the issues of diversity facing Michigan. These students have demonstrated a public interest and commitment to the ideals of integration, equality, and social and racial justice, ideals that Dr. King promoted throughout his lifetime. During the roundtable, the young people will have the opportunity to meet face to face with Governor Granholm and MDCR's Director Parker to discuss issues of concern, including the social, racial, and economic climate, and the future of the state. They will also dialogue with the leaders about educational issues, justice, and what they believe are the necessary policies to make Michigan a better place for everyone to live, particularly its young people.

WXYZ-TV Channel 7 News Anchors, Stephen Clark and Carolyn Clifford are guest speakers for the event. This event is open to the media and general public, although only the invited youth may participate in the discussion.
