Michigan Women's Groups To Host Press Conference On Equal Pay

Contact:  Harold Core, Public Information Officer 517-241-3986
Agency: Civil Rights

When: Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Event begins at 11AM.
Where: Capitol Building Rotunda, Lansing, MI 48933
Purpose: The Michigan Women's Commission, the American Association of University Women, WomenWork!, the National Organization for Women, the Pay Equity Network, and others will be addressing the state of equal pay in Michigan. Michigan women continue to earn less than their male counterparts, earning about 69.8 cents for each dollar a man earns. In both the public and the private sectors, most women are still employed in jobs that pay a lower wage rate than men's wages, regardless of the duties performed and the value of their work. Equal Pay Day aims to bring attention to these discrepancies by marking how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. This event is open to the media and general public.
