  People With Disabilities
I am a person with a disability and can do the essential functions of my job. Am I protected by the ADA if my employer fires me because of my disability?
 
Answer:
Yes, the ADA prohibits employers with 15 or more employees from discriminating against a qualified person with a disability in hiring, pay, promotions, benefits, training or firing. (Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Right Act applies to employers with one or more employees.) For more information on the ADA and employment issues, contact MCDC for a copy of the U.S. EEOC's (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) booklet "Your Employment Rights as an Individual with Disability." MCDC also has copies of the EEOC's ADA publication "Your Responsibilities as an Employer" for employers who have hired or are seeking to hire people with disabilities. Employers who are looking for advice on how to make reasonable accommodations for their employees with disabilities can call the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) at 1-800-ADA-WORK. JAN is sponsored by the Office of Disability Employment Policy in Washington, D.C.
