How To Read A Food Label, Smart Eating

June Nutrition
How to read a food label
Food labeling is required by the FDA on most prepared foods and is often available on produce, fish and meats.  It allows the consumer to make educated choices when grocery shopping. The label provides information including serving size, calories, fat, fiber, sodium, and vitamin and mineral content.  Learn how to read the food label accurately so you can use it to choose the healthiest foods.  Then take this quiz to see how knowledgeable you are about the nutrients in common foods.
Smart Eating tips
fruits and vegetables on shelf Is there a secret to healthy eating? Generally, a nutritious diet includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy and protein, a small amount of good fat, not too much salt, sugar or alcohol and enough water. Two important points: Avoid food with "empty calories" such as donuts that provide little of the nutrition (fiber, vitamins and minerals) that the body needs. And remember that you will gain weight if you take in more calories than you expend. These 2 facts seem simple but are essential and if you follow them, you will be on the road to eating healthier.
