STAIR CLIMBERS
Stair climbers are designed to help one gain aerobic conditioning, as well as tone muscles in the calves, thighs and buttocks. Begin with warm ups and stretching (as before any aerobic exercises). Minimize use of the handlebars to avoid lessening the overall intensity of your workout.

STAIR RACING
"When a massive blackout hit New York in 2003, then 35-year-old Jamie Leone had no choice but to take the stairs to her 28th-floor apartment. The next day, the elevators came back to life, but Leone opted to keep on climbing . . . In the recent Empire State Building Run-up, an annual stair-climbing race at the Manhattan landmark, Leone dashed up 86 floors (1,576 steps) in 20 minutes, 40 seconds -- about 10 minutes behind the winner, but a solid first-time performance. Stair climbing, she says, has taught her how to reach new heights in other areas of life." Article from Business Week Online
Stair exercises may be used to improve strength, flexibility, and conditioning. Here is a link to tips on using stairs for a quick cardio workout.

IN THE NEWS
"James Levine, M.D. and his colleagues in the NEAT (Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis) lab at Mayo Clinic have pioneered an "Office of the Future" -- a fully functioning office that bears a marked resemblance to a gym. Complete with treadmills that serve as both desks and computer platforms and a two-lane walking track that serves as a meeting room, Dr. Levine and his entire staff have a unique, active work environment."
Could it happen in Michigan?
