YOU CAN MANAGE YOUR CHOLESTEROL WITH EXERCISE
|
Increasing the amount of exercise you get can help lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase you HDL (good) cholesterol. If your cholesterol is much too high, combining exercise with diet and/or drug therapy can be very effective.
It’s important to note that, even without a change in diet, exercise can reduce cholesterol. A study done by "Duke University Medical Center" researchers proved that exercise without accompanying weight loss had a positive effect on cholesterol levels.
The study also showed that it was the amount of exercise that made the difference, not the intensity.
The amount of exercise needs to be fairly significant: probably about six hours per week of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking, swimming, walk-jogging or cycling. Such exercise could burn around 1500 kcal per week (about the same as needed for weight loss), and reduce cholesterol by 10-20 percent over a 12-15 week period.
For more information on this subject and a sample exercise regimen, check out American Council on Exercise "Fit Facts". As always, if you are overweight and sedentary, check with your doctor before starting an exercise program and don't overdo. Slow and steady does it best! |
