CAN EXERCISE REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER?
"Among 1,231 women with breast cancer who were followed for a minimum of 8.3 years, those who obtained about 4 hours or more of weekly moderate-intensity recreational activity over their lifetime had a 44 percent lower risk of death from breast cancer", report Dr. Christine Friedenreich and colleagues of Alberta Health Services-Alberta Cancer Board in Calgary, Canada.
Risk for recurrence, progression, or new primary breast cancer was likewise reduced by 34 percent among women reporting similar levels of recreational physical activity, note Friendenreich and colleagues.
These findings suggest "being physically active before a breast cancer diagnosis can improve survival after breast cancer," Friendenreich told Reuters Health."

This is a lifestyle choice that women can make. Wouldn't you do anything to reduce your chances of developing a dreaded disease? Get started on some type of aerobic activity for 30 minutes at least every other day. Walking is a great form of exercise and it requires little financial investment. Add some small weights and you gain even more benefit.

Even women who had developed breast cancer benefited from exercise, according to the American Cancer Society. "In the study of nearly 3,000 women. . . After 10 years of follow-up, 92% of the women who exercised 3-5 hours per week (or about half an hour per day) were still alive, compared to 86% of those who got less than an hour a week of physical activity." www.cancer.org |
