Deaf Health Fair
October 11, 2008
The University of Michigan and the Michigan Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MADHH) present the first ever statewide Deaf Health Fair at Madonna University, designed exclusively for Michigan's Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. This all-day event will feature workshops and lectures presented in ASL, flu shots, blood pressure screenings, cholesterol checks, diabetes screenings, and opportunities to speak with doctors, nurses, and dentists easily, via qualified sign language interpreters.
The fair will feature keynote speakers (many who are themselves Deaf or Hard of Hearing) presenting more in-depth lectures in ASL, including Dr. Samuel Acherson. Dr. Acherson is a licensed audiologist who will discuss cochlear implants, hearing aids, and assistive listening devices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults.
The fair will be held at Madonna University, Kresge Auditorium, 36600 Schoolcraft Road, Livonia, Michigan 48150.

In America it's estimated that 1 in 5 people have a limitation in physical or mental functions. Common causes are arthritis, multiple sclerosis, limb loss, paralysis, cerebral palsy and stroke. It can be difficult to find fitness programs geared to those that are physically challenged.
National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) is an information center concerned with physical activity and disability. The mission of NCPAD is to promote the health benefits that can be gained from participating in regular physical activity, and the slogan is Exercise is for EVERY body. This site provides information and resources that can enable people with disabilities to become as physically active as they choose to be.

Remember to check with local gyms and fitness clubs. Many are barrier free and have personal trainers that can work with physically challenged individuals.
When fitness programs and contests are offered at your worksite, ask the program coordinator if there will be activities for those who are physically challenged.
