Keep Plugging Away!

June 2006
Working On Wellness Fitness
Is your June calendar filled already?  Maybe exercising is one of the last things on your mind!  Below are some potential benefits to be gained from a few exercise options to help boost your determination to keep plugging away at Physical Activity:

National Men's Health
Week

elliptical machine

Elliptical machines offer
a low-impact exercise. Some manufacturers claim that the machines offer a total body workout in 20 to 30 minutes. Some also claim that you can burn as much as 720 calories or more per hour using their machines.  Although the exact calorie expenditure can depend on many factors, ellipticals may burn calories at a rate similar to moderate-to-vigorous use of a treadmill or cross-country ski machine.
Exercise balls can help with a total body workout while improving your balance. You may even burn a few calories simply sitting on the ball, working to maintain your balance. More. . .

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement (coupled with focused breathing patterns) designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Whereas it may not be easy to know how many calories are burned doing pilates, due to a number of variables, you may try this calculator for an approximation.

You don't have to go out
and buy a ton of expensive equipment.  Some simple basics can help you with
staying active.  If you're
easily bored, mix it up.  If all else fails, walking is still as good as it was 10,000 steps ago.
TO PREVENT GRADUAL WEIGHT GAIN: Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity on most days of the week, while not exceeding calorie intake requirements.

TO SUSTAIN WEIGHT LOSS: Aim for at least 60-90 minutes of daily moderate intensity physical activity, while not exceeding calorie intake requirements.

At least 30 minutes of moderate intensity
physical activity on most days of the week is recommended.   An example of moderate intensity activity is brisk walking (3-4 miles per hour). NOTE: Weight-bearing exercise is important for bone density.
