Okay, everybody in the water!
The pool is more than just a great place to cool off when the weather is hot. It can be used year round to enhance your exercise routine, and it's fun and relaxing.
Whether you're swimming laps, getting some aqua therapy, or doing water aerobics, you can get a terrific workout in the pool. Working against the water increases resistance so the faster and harder you work, the more intense your workout becomes. If you have an injury or painful arthritic joints, just take it slow and easy to build strength while protecting the sore or injured joints and/or muscles.
Some benefits of water exercise include:-
Increased cardiovascular and respiratory strength
 -
Better mobility and range of motion
-
Increased muscle strength and flexibility
-
Better coordination, balance and posture
-
Helps with weight control
Because your body is supported by water and the heart rate is relatively lower, aquatic therapy is usually safe for obese folks, pregnant women and those suffering from high blood pressure or heart disease. Check with your doctor if any of these conditions apply to you prior to starting an aquatics program.
If you suffer from arthritis, a warm water pool can be an excellent way to exercise without stressing your joints. It also improves circulation and helps relax tight muscles. The Arthritis Foundation recommends water exercise. Check with your local chapter for class availability.
If you are physically challenged, inquire at your local YMCA, fitness clubs or junior college regarding water aerobics availability, and assistance for persons with special or individual needs.
