Health Services

This site includes information on services for students to appraise, protect, and promote health. Health ServicesThese services are designed to ensure access or referral to primary health care services or both, foster appropriate use of primary health care services, prevent and control communicable disease and other health problems, provide emergency care for illness or injury, promote and provide optimum sanitary conditions for a safe school facility and school environment, and provide educational and counseling opportunities for promoting and maintaining individual, family, and community health. Qualified professionals such as physicians, nurses, dentists, health educators, and other allied health personnel provide these services.

School Asthma Education Packet - "Never Judge a Book by Its Cover, and Other Important Lessons about Asthma" were developed to disseminate accurate asthma information to Michigan schools. Michigan Child Protection Law requires the reporting of child abuse and neglect by certain persons (called mandated reporters) and permits the reporting of child abuse and neglect by all persons.

State Board of Education Approved Model Policy on the Management of Diabetes in the School Setting
There are an increasing number of children with diabetes who require accommodations during the school day. The need for careful control and self-management of diabetes by the child/family is an essential component of care in order to prevent short and long term complications from diabetes. Portions of this model policy are adopted from the 2010 Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed - A Guide for School Personnel, by NDEP and the U.S. Department of HHS.

Medications

Medications in Schools and MDE Model Policy 
Under the direction of a school administrator, a school employee may administer medication to a student as long as there is written permission of the parent/guardian and the medication is given in compliance with the instructions of a physician. Except in an emergency, the medication must be given in the presence of another adult. The school employee is held harmless from liability except in the case of gross negligence or misconduct.
