LANSING - Kathleen N. Straus was elected president of the State Board of Education for the fifth consecutive two-year term at the board's monthly meeting in January. It will be her sixth time overall leading the state's top education body.

In November 2008, Straus and John C. Austin were re-elected statewide to the State Board of Education. This will be Straus's third eight-year term on the State Board and Austin's second term. Austin will continue to serve as the State Board's vice president.

Other officers re-elected by the board include: Carolyn L. Curtin as the board's secretary; Marianne Yared McGuire as treasurer; and Nancy Danhof as the State Board's delegate to the National Association of State Boards of Education.

Straus said the State Board of Education will continue to focus on its four priorities:

  • Re-imagine the preK-12 education system in Michigan that will lead to the State Board of Education's expectation for student achievement;
  • Continue to review and improve Michigan's teacher preparation system;
  • Continue to advocate and promote high school reform, with an emphasis on relevance, relationship, and implementation; and
  • Implement the "Darkening the Dotted Line" partnership between the Michigan Department of Education and intermediate school districts.

    The next State Board of Education meeting is 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in the State Board of Education Room at the Hannah Building, Lansing, MI.
