What is the Child and Adult Care Food Program?
The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program. It provides cash reimbursement for nutritious meals and helps develop positive eating habits for children enrolled in nonresidential child care centers and day care homes.
What are day care home eligibility requirements?
All day care homes must be registered or licensed by the State of Michigan, Office of Children and Adult Licensing, enrolled for relative care by the State of Michigan Child Development and Care, or have (military or tribal) licensing or approval.
How does the program operate?
Day care homes apply for CACFP participation under the auspices of a sponsoring organization.
What are the rates of reimbursement?
Reimbursement rates are based on the provider's classification as either a Tier 1 or Tier 2 home. A Tier 1 home is a day care home located in a low income area or a day care home whose provider's household is low income.
A Tier 2 home is a day care home not eligible as a Tier 1 home. Providers in Tier 2 homes may be eligible for Tier 1 rates for meals and snacks served to children from low income families.

Meals and snacks must meet the meal pattern requirements identified in the CACFP regulations.
Children must be enrolled in the child care program and within the regulatory age limits; children 0-12 years old; migrant children 0-15 years old; and all children with disabilities, regardless of age, if the majority of the enrollees in the day care home are 18 years old or younger.
