Traditionally, Early and Middle College schools are partnerships between public secondary schools and higher education institutions. In Macomb County, the education community has recognized a need for more young people to prepare themselves to serve as health care professionals and, thus, has invited health care businesses to become our partners in the attempt to guide our students to careers that will ensure success in their professional, societal and personal lives.
Planning for the Middle College has been occurring for the last year, with various partners engaging as the direction for the project was established. Unable to accommodate the Middle College at this time due to space issues, Macomb Community College has still been an active participant in the planning process. Seeking a solution to the problem of locating on a college or hospital campus, a new approach was devised. The Macomb Middle College partnership will take advantage of the existing concurrent enrollment program, named "Macomb 2 Oakland", for reciprocal articulation of credits attained by students taking Oakland University classes. Those credits will be transferred to the associate's degree at Macomb Community College. This unique design will allow the Middle College students to participate in college life on the university campus, the community college campus and the hospital campus.
