Kathleen N. Straus
D-Detroit, Term Expires 1/1/2017  
Mrs. Straus, first elected to the State Board of Education in 1992, re-elected in 2000, and re-elected again in 2008.  She is in her fifth term as President of the State Board, elected by the Board.  She has served as staff director of the Senate Education Committee, as director of governmental relations for the Michigan Association of School Boards, and president of the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit  .  She holds a BA in economics from Hunter  College  , and did graduate work at several universities.  She is the mother of two adult children and the proud grandmother of four outstanding grandchildren.
