Catalogs
For locating materials in the law collection, use the Library of Michigan's on-line catalog. The catalog is accessible from all public workstations in the law library. You can also find it on the Internet or dial into it on your home computer. Although some older materials and collections of foreign law titles have not been added to the catalog yet, you can locate these materials by searching the old card catalog located near the front of the library.
Copiers
Three paper to paper copy machines are located near the front of the library. Only one machine accepts coins or bills. All three accept copy cards which can be purchased for $1.00 from the vendacard machine in the copy room. There is no charge for the card and the initial cost provides 5 copies. You can add value to the card. Two microfiche reader-printers are also available. They accept copy cards only. All copies cost 20 cents per exposure.
Food and Beverages
No food or drink is allowed in the library.
Interlibrary Loan
Materials not available at the Library of Michigan can be obtained by interlibrary loan for legislative staff and state employees.
Lost and Found
Personal items left in the library will be held at the circulation desk for one week. If not claimed, they are transferred to the State Police Capitol Post.
Microfiche
Many titles are available in microfiche only. These include all state bar journals, numerous law reviews, state session laws, early federal and state reports and U.S. Supreme Court records and briefs. Microfiche titles are cataloged in the online catalog and are classified using Library of Congress call numbers. The microfiche collection is housed in cabinets located at the front of the library, to the right of the main aisle.
Reshelving Materials
There is no need to reshelve materials. You may leave them on the tables or carrels. Materials you copy can be left on the carts in the copy room. Microfiche can be placed in the baskets located on top of the fiche cabinets.
Seating
Seating is available at the front of the library. Additional seating is located near the back of the library where two banks of carrels provide a quieter place for research.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in the library or in the Michigan Historical Center. (Executive order 92-3)
