Rhonda Gowler Greene was born on October 29, 1955, in Salem, Illinois, the daughter of a sales engineer and a homemaker. While growing up, Greene says she never thought of becoming a writer. She wanted to be a schoolteacher, and that’s what she became after graduating from college – a teacher for children with learning disabilities. She also completed a second degree to become a school librarian, but by then, she had married and had children. She decided to stay home with them while they were growing up.
Greene has four children – Matt, Lianna, Aaron, and Brad. Her family has always had a variety of pets – currently she shares her home with 3 fish, 2 hamsters, 2 rabbits, 2 parakeets, 2 doves, 1 Indian Ring-neck parrot, 1 tortoise, and 1 cockapoo named Kippy. She lives with her family in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and visits schools all over the state to talk to children about her writing career.
Greene read to her children constantly, and that is when her interest in writing began to grow. After more than 200 rejections, she sold her first book, Barnyard Song, to a publisher. Surprisingly, only three months later, she sold another manuscript, When a Line Bends…a Shape Begins. A third sale came six months after that. Where does she get her ideas for books? Greene says she often gets an idea while driving in her car or doing the dishes. But she gets just as many ideas while studying other children's books. Surprisingly enough, she has never met any of the illustrators of her books, although she would love to someday in order to thank them for their beautiful work.

- Jamboree Day
