The preschool program at the Michigan School for the Deaf is chock full of language, literacy, and learning! It's a full-day program staffed by a certified teacher of the deaf and two classroom aides. Preschool students spend time each day working in the classroom on language and vocabulary, beginning math and reading development, and science and social studies skills. Daily story time is built around a thematic unit, an author study, or story genre. Outside of the classroom, students' physical and creative outlets are nurtured with art, gym, and swimming classes. At lunch time, the students, teacher, and aides walk to the cafeteria to have lunch and continue learning language and manners. Each afternoon, the preschoolers have an hour of nap time - complete with little cots, rocking chairs, and blankets. Snack time and recesses are built in to the schedule, as well. Parent involvement in the preschool program is encouraged; parents can spend time in the classroom observing, volunteering, and learning. In addition, parents are invited to attend special in-school events and field trips into the community.
